Colorado Preservation Inc. announces the beginning of work to renovate the exterior of the historic Mathews Gotthelf house at 2601 Champa Street in Denver. There will be a press conference and ceremony with coffee on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the project . Please join us for this event! Colorado Preservation Inc. purchased the 5,000 square foot house that was built in 1880 in the Queen Anne style with assistance from Colorado State Bank and Trust and the Curtis Park neighborhood residents. Funding for the exterior renovation is being provided by the State Historical Fund administered from the Colorado Historical Society and by Colorado Preservation Inc. in cooperation with
the Boettcher Foundation and the Arthur and Helen Johnson Foundation.

The house is one of the largest Victorian era houses in Denver. It has brick masonry bearing walls and a sandstone foundation. The house has twelve foot ceilings and several original fireplaces, as well as original molding, decorative transoms and fretwork. The house has a mansard roof decorated in slate.

James F. Mathews, an ore and bullion broker, was the first owner. Isaac Gotthelf purchased the house in 1890. Gotthelf made his fortune through cattle and banking interests Saguache in the upper San Luis Valley. He was twice elected to the Colorado House of Representatives.
